Parts of Speech<\/h2>\n

In English, there are nine types of words, or parts of speech<\/b>. Knowing the parts of speech will make it easy to understand other Crowd Content University lessons.<\/p>\n

1. Verbs<\/h3>\n

Verbs are key because you can\u2019t have a sentence without them. They\u2019re the action words that vivify your writing. Some verbs, like wrestle,<\/i> sprint<\/i>, and accelerate<\/i>, are obviously active, but don\u2019t be fooled into thinking that verbs have to be sporty.<\/p>\n

Be<\/i>, sit<\/i>, and write<\/i> are verbs because they all refer to doing something (even if it\u2019s just existing).<\/p>\n

2. Noun<\/h3>\n

You might remember learning that a noun is a person, place, or thing. So, Sherlock Holmes<\/i>, Timbuktu<\/i>, blogger<\/i>, and love<\/i> are all nouns. As you can see, some nouns are capitalized and some aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n

3. Pronouns<\/h3>\n

Pronouns stand in for nouns. I<\/i>, they<\/i>, yourself<\/i>, who<\/i>, and somebody<\/i> are all pronouns.<\/p>\n

4. Adjectives<\/h3>\n

Adjectives modify nouns, meaning that they change nouns, usually by making them more specific. By adding adjectives to the noun \u201cwriter,\u201d we can say \u201ccrazy<\/i>, chocoholic<\/i>, efficient <\/i>writer.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Adverbs<\/h3>\n

Adverbs have the same function of modifying, but they change verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Live vicariously<\/i>, extremely<\/i> adventurous, and very malignantly<\/i> are examples of of adjectives in their three uses. As the examples show, many (but not all!) adverbs end in -ly.<\/p>\n

6. Prepositions<\/h3>\n

While we\u2019re talking about modifiers, let\u2019s cover prepositions, which specify when or where something happens or is. At<\/i>, beside<\/i>, in<\/i>, to<\/i>, and since<\/i> are all prepositions.<\/p>\n

Some people consider it bad grammar to end a sentence with a preposition, but don\u2019t worry about this convention in informal, online writing.<\/p>\n

7. Conjunctions<\/h3>\n

Conjunctions join words, phrases, and clauses together. They include, but<\/i>, so<\/i>, although<\/i>, because<\/i>, and<\/i> as<\/i>.<\/p>\n

8. Articles<\/h3>\n

Articles are easy to learn because there are only two of them: a<\/i> (which changes to an<\/i> in front of vowels) and the<\/i>. Articles always go before nouns.<\/p>\n

A\/an<\/i> is the indefinite article, meaning that it refers to a non-specific noun (e.g. \u201ca dragon\u201d means any dragon). The<\/i> is the definite article, so it does refer to a specific noun (e.g. \u201cthe dragon\u201d is a particular dragon that you\u2019re referring to).<\/p>\n

9. Interjections<\/h3>\n

We\u2019re almost done! Interjections\u00a0<\/b>are exclamations like wow<\/i>, yes<\/i>, well<\/i>, darn<\/i>, and um<\/i>. They\u2019re separated from the rest of the sentence by an exclamation mark or comma, depending on how strong the feeling is.<\/p>\n
