Thousands of websites existed simply to be used for backlinks to boost SEO. And, it worked.<\/p>\n<p>Any link was a good link, and they all helped to build page rank. Today, thankfully, the rules have changed.<\/p>\n<h2>Quality Links<\/h2>\n<p>Now only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quicksprout.com\/2015\/01\/28\/7-proactive-ways-to-get-backlinks-that-actually-boost-your-traffic\/\">high-quality links will help you<\/a>. The link farms and low-quality sites that once worked well can actually count against you. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/66356?hl=en\">Google<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/66356?hl=en\">\u00a0will actively penalize sites that use shady backlinks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before creating anything that will link back to your site, consider what type of site it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will it end up helping, or hindering, your page rank?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Guest Posting<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most common ways to get a new backlink is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdcontent.com\/blog\/content-marketing\/how-to-guest-blog-the-right-way\/\">create a guest post<\/a> for a blog and to put a link to your site in the bio at the end. However, even guest posting can be penalized\u00a0upon if not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcutts.com\/blog\/guest-blogging\/\">done correctly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before considering guest posting, think carefully about how this can benefit you other than getting a link. <a href=\"http:\/\/contentmarketinginstitute.com\/2015\/05\/clients-guest-blogging\/\">Building word of mouth<\/a> so that other people will link to your site is really your end goal<span style=\"color: #1c2336; font-family: Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', Georgia, Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 18px;\">\u2014<\/span>not the link itself.<\/p>\n<h2>Watch Your Numbers<\/h2>\n<p>If you do decide to guest post either on a blog or an informational website of another type, don&#8217;t send out posts to every site that will take you. <strong>A high quantity of low-quality links\u00a0will count against you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a lot of low-quality links out there, <a href=\"http:\/\/googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ca\/2009\/10\/dealing-with-low-quality-backlinks.html\">get rid of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>So, How Do You Build Links?<\/h2>\n<p>Google is encouraging people not to build their own links. You still need backlinks in order to rank well, but by selectively linking your high-quality content, those backlinks will come naturally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/guide\/seo\/link-building-ranking-search-engines\">Place your link in a few well-considered places<\/a>, use social media to promote them, and hope that others will link to you.
