Writing guides often advocate limiting <\/span>adjectives<\/span><\/a>. This is tricky advice for product description writers<\/a> because it\u2019s tempting to rely on adjectives to sell your product.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choose Verbs Over Adjectives<\/h3>\n

Action verbs pack a punch. Try to avoid using \u201cis\u201d, \u201care\u201d, \u201cbe\u201d, and passive verbs, all of which seem bland. On the other hand, action verbs speak stronger than adjectives. Rather than cramming your sentences with adjectives and weak verbs, choose strong verbs. <\/span><\/p>\n

Bad:<\/span><\/strong> This <\/span>beautiful<\/span><\/span> necklace <\/span>is<\/span> perfect<\/span><\/span> for your <\/span>fashionable<\/span><\/span> tastes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here I changed the generic adjectives <\/span>beautiful<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>perfect<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>fashionable<\/span><\/i>, and the weak verb<\/span> is<\/span><\/i> to the strong verb <\/span>satisfy <\/span><\/i>and the interesting noun <\/span>fashionista<\/span><\/i>. Which sentence makes you want to buy a necklace?<\/span><\/p>\n

Get Sensory with Your Adjectives<\/h3>\n

Run-of-the-mill adjectives don\u2019t sell, but sensory adjectives do. A sensory adjective appeals to smell, taste, touch, sight, or sound. Sensory adjectives help buyers experience your product virtually, and that experience sells.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bad:<\/span><\/strong> Our soft, lilac print pillow will help you sleep better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Better:<\/span><\/strong> Dream the night away on this creamy soft pillow. The lilac print pattern leaves you practically smelling the flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you include an adjective in a product description, ask, \u201cIs this sensory? How does it help sell my product? Could I replace it with a more specific and powerful word?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
