After all, the faster you write the happier your clients will be with your turnaround time, and the more money you\u2019ll make. Since speed is one of your goals, you might think that you don\u2019t have time for outlining. But you do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Save Time<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, outlining takes time. But if it stops your writer\u2019s block and limits the editing that you need to do, then <\/span><b>outlining actually saves time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Let\u2019s look at some outlining techniques and time-saving strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Work Out a Title<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you can write, you need to know what you\u2019re writing about. That advice sounds obvious, but I mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> know. Let\u2019s say your client has given you a topic, but no title. You need to narrow that topic down to a working title. Corey Eridon explains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/how-to-choose-solid-topic-next-blog-post-ht\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the difference between a topic and a working title<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c[A] topic is something general, while a working title is specific\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Topic:<\/strong> SEO 2014 trends<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Title:<\/strong> The 5 Hottest SEO Trends of 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Topic:<\/strong> Homemade artisan bread<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Title:<\/strong> How to Make Artisan Sourdough Bread Overnight<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Your working title doesn\u2019t have to be your final wording<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it\u2019s just a guide for what you want to communicate in your writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Brainstorm<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you want to brainstorm ideas relating to your title. Remember, <\/span><b>in brainstorming, all ideas are good ideas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Write down as many ideas as possible, but once you can\u2019t think of any more, move on to the next step. If you can\u2019t think of a title, you can brainstorm that too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Organize<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019ve got ideas, it\u2019s time to arrange them. Ask yourself: What are the most important ideas here? Are there any overarching themes? What\u2019s the best flow? Organize your ideas together in logical groups and discard unimportant or irrelevant ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Title: How to Use Commas Like a Pro<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainstorm: lists, no comma splices, conjunctions, with quotation marks, with adjectives, Oxford comma, difference between commas and semicolons<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organized:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lists<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxford Comma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conjunctions<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No comma splices<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Quotation Marks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Adjectives<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See how I\u2019ve grouped together related ideas, arranged my ideas in a logical order (simple to more complex uses), and eliminated less relevant ideas (difference between commas and semicolons)? For this outline, I used bullet points, but you can also use a simple list, a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mind_map\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mind map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/media\/pdf\/20081113013048_544.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traditional outline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or something else that works for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tweak Your Outline<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does your outline look? If you spent a lot of time brainstorming, it might be full of ideas (maybe even too many). If you had trouble brainstorming, you might think of some ideas that you need to add now. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also check that each of your main points has a similar number of supporting points. If you\u2019ve got six supporting ideas there, but none here, try combining some ideas or breaking the big group into a couple smaller ones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tweak your outline until you think you\u2019ve got all the information you need to write easily and without interruptions.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Just Write<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations! You\u2019ve already done the most difficult work. After outlining, writing will be easy-peasy. Now, I can\u2019t promise that you\u2019ll never get stuck while writing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you do, ask yourself what information you should have had in your outline to help you, and include that information next time.
